What we believe here at Petra Bible Church holds fast to the traditions of historical Christian Orthodoxy. Found below is a summarized version of the most important doctrines of our faith.
THE WORD OF GOD
We believe the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the inspired Word of God, inerrant in the original writings, complete as a revelation of God's will for salvation, and the supreme and final authority in faith and life.
(2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21; Matthew 5:18; 24:35; 1 Corinthians 2:13)
We believe in one God, creator and sustainer of all things, eternally existing in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; that, these are equal in every divine perfection and that they execute distinct but harmonious offices in the work of creation, providence, and redemption. (Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 45:5-7; 1 Corinthians 8:4; John 4:24; Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14)
GOD THE FATHER
We believe in God the Father, creator of all things; an infinite, personal Spirit, perfect in holiness, wisdom, power, and love. We believe He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men, that He hears and answers prayer, and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 8:6; Ephesians 3:9; Psalm 103:19; Romans 11:36; 1 Chronicles 29:11; Habakkuk 1:13; John 1:12; Galatians 4:5; John 6:37)
We believe that Jesus Christ is God's eternal Son, and has precisely the same nature, attributes, and perfection as God the Father and God the Holy Spirit. We believe further that He is not only the true God but also true man, conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. We also believe in His sinless life, His atoning death, His bodily resurrection from the dead, His ascension into heaven, His priestly intercession on behalf of His people, and His personal, visible, pre-millennial return from heaven. (John 1:1; 1:14; 10:30; 14:9; Colossians 1:15-17; Hebrews 1:2; 7:25; 9:24; Philippians 2:5-8; Colossians 2:9; Isaiah 7:14; 9:6; 1 Peter 2:24; Romans 4:25; 8:34)
We believe in the Holy Spirit, His personality, and His work in regeneration, sanctification, and preservation. His ministry is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ and implement Christ's work of redeeming the lost and empowering the believer for godly living and service. (1 Corinthians 2:10-13; 12:11; Ephesians 1:13; 4:30; Hebrews 9:14; Psalm 139:7-10; Isaiah 40:13-14; Romans 15:13; John 16:13)
We believe God created man, male and female, in the image of God and free from sin. We further believe man fell into sin, leaving him spiritually dead, a sinner by nature and choice. We also believe that the Holy Spirit regenerates those who repent of sin through trust in Jesus Christ as Savior. (Genesis 2:7, 16-17; 3:1-19; James 3:9; John 3:36; Romans 3:23; 6:23; 1 Corinthians 2:14; Ephesians 2:1-3; 1 John 1:8; Jeremiah 17:9)
We believe in salvation by God's grace alone through faith in his son Jesus Christ alone. We further believe that this salvation is based upon the sovereign grace of God, was purchased by Christ on the cross, and is received by man through faith, apart from any human merit, works, or ritual. We further believe salvation results in righteous living, good works, and proper social concern. (John 1:12; 3:16; 5:24; Ephesians 1:7; 2:8-10; 1 Peter 1:18-19; Titus 3:5; Romans 8:28-30; 2 Thessalonians 2:13; 1 John 3:1-10)
We believe that the Church is the spiritual body of which Christ is the head. We believe that the true Church is composed of all persons who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit. We believe that this body expresses itself in local assemblies whose members have associated themselves for worship, for instruction, for evangelism, and for service. We also believe in the interdependence of local churches and the mutual submission of believers to each other in love. (1 Corinthians 12:12-13; Ephesians 1:22; 2:11; 3:6; 4:15; Matthew 18:5-14; Titus 1:5; Revelation 22:12)
We believe the ordinances of the local church are believer's baptism by immersion and the Lord's Supper.
(Acts 2:38-42; Acts 8:36-39; Romans 6:1-11; 1 Corinthians 10:16; 11:28-32)
We believe that the supreme task of every believer is to glorify God in his life, that his conduct should be blameless before the world, that he should be a faithful steward of his possessions, and that he should seek to realize for himself the full stature of maturity in Christ. (Titus 1:10-16; 2:11-13; Ephesians 3:21; 4:13-16; 1 Thessalonians 5:22; 2 Thessalonians 3:6-15; Philippians 1:27)
SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE
We believe that each local church is self-governing in function, and must be free from interference by any ecclesiastical or political authority. We further believe that every human being is directly responsible to God in matters of faith and life, and that each should be free to worship God according to the dictates of his conscience. (John 18:36; 2 Corinthians 5:20; Romans 13)
We believe in the bodily resurrection and divine judgment of the saved and the lost, and the eternal existence of all men in either Heaven or the lake of fire. (1 Corinthians 15:28; 35-58; 2 Corinthians 5:10; Revelation 20-21; Romans 2:6-8; Ephesians 5:5; John 17:3; )
